Twitter is looking into subscription options.

Twitter is looking into adding subscription options to become less dependent on targeted ads, Bloomberg reported Monday. Several teams are apparently in the early stages of researching different approaches.

Possibilities include a "tipping system" in which you'd pay people you follow for exclusive content, a charge to use dashboard app Tweetdeck or extra features like "undo send" and profile customization for users.

Twitter acknowledged in an email to CNET that it'll "research and experiment with ways to further diversify" its revenue beyond ads in the coming years, but emphasized that we shouldn't expect major changes to its revenue model in 2021.

"These may include subscriptions and other approaches that will give people and businesses of all sizes on Twitter access to unique features and enhanced opportunities for content creation, discovery, and engagement," Bruce Falck, the company's revenue product lead, said in a statement.

The report comes after Twitter acquired Revue, a platform that lets people build and publish email newsletters, which hinted at its plans to expand into long-form content and paid subscriptions.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
